English Language Centre York

Overview

Situated in a beautiful historic setting, English Language Centre York offers junior students the opportunity to learn English in a quintessential British city while meeting other young learners from across the world. With a population of just 200,000, York is a small and safe city and the school is just a short distance from the famous historic landmarks of York Minster, the City Walls and the Shambles.

Course structure: 15 hours of English, 5 afternoon activities including 1 half-day excursion, 3 evening activities and 1 weekend excursion

*Individual students must be aged 14+. Over 18s might be present on junior courses in closed groups. Adult students may also be present in the school.

A typical day learning English in York

On the juniors programme in York you will experience English in a variety of contexts, from classroom learning to interactive social activities and excursions.

 

Mornings

09.15-12.45*

In the morning you will join fellow English language students** in a class that is adapted to your level of English. You will improve your speaking, reading, listening and writing skills through a variety of interactive classroom activities, covering exciting topics like British culture, entertainment, clothes and fashion, or music.

You will get a break half way through your lessons.

 

Afternoons

14.00-17.30*

After lunch, you will have afternoon activities such as sports, arts and crafts, or treasure hunts.  For 3 afternoons a week you will be taken on afternoon excursions in and around the beautiful city of York**, giving you the opportunity to practise your English language skills in real-life contexts around the city in places such as the Jorvik Viking Experience, the York Chocolate Story, or the National Railway Museum.

 

Evenings

19.30-22.00*

For 3 nights every week you will get to socialise with your friends in an evening activity. Led by our fun and enthusiastic Activity Leaders, the evening activities vary from a river boat cruise and Viking walks to games nights and mini golf.

When you are not on an evening activity you will be looked after by your homestay host, offering a fantastic opportunity to practise your English and learn about British culture.

**Our York young learner centre operates on a zig-zag format, so depending on the week you join, you will start with either morning or afternoon classes. For example, if you have morning classes in your first week, you will have afternoon classes in your second week, and so on.

At York our junior students stay with one carefully selected homestay hosts, who live only 30 minutes or less from the school by bus. Living with a host family is a fantastic way to immerse yourself into a new culture, giving you the perfect opportunity to put your English into practice at home as well as at school.

 

Homestay

Immerse yourself in London life with a local homestay host, providing more contact with English speakers and a real insight into life in York. Our hosts treat each student as a member of the family, eating together and sharing common living areas.

Location: Up to 30 minutes from the school by bus
Room: Single or twin rooms
Bathroom: Shared
Sharing: Up to four students per household, mixed nationality sharing unless requested
Meals: Full-board included (daily breakfast and dinner, and all Sunday meals with your host; hot lunch on campus Monday-Friday; packed lunches provided on Saturdays)
Laundry: Facilities provided by your host
